“Bridging the Gap Between Ancient Egyptian Wisdom and Modern Healing Practices”

Authentic Reproductions of Egyptian Sacred Oils and Incense

Wandering Stars offers a magical product line of scented ceremonial and cosmetic emollient unguents, anointing oils, and temple incense, recreated from translations of lists and recipes carved in hieroglyphs discovered on the “laboratory” walls of the Ptolemaic Horus Temple at Edfu and Isis Temple at Philae. These are also listed as offerings in Seti I’s New Kingdom “Mansion of the Gods” Temple at Abydos and in the sarcophagus chamber of the Old Kingdom Pyramid of Unas at Saqqara, among several others.

“… it is almost impossible to overstate the importance of fragrance and cosmetics to the ancient Egyptians. In consideration of their prodigious feats in art, architecture, astronomy, and medicine, and their sacred science of spiritual knowledge and the symbolism that supports them, perhaps we should take a closer look at these powerful olfactory and emollient “medicines”, and begin experimenting with them in our contemporary practices of cosmetology, aromatherapy, healing arts, and spiritual communion. All in all, they are simply divine to the nose, skin, hair, and spirit - whatever your interests or beliefs may be.“

- from the Wandering Stars essay, “The Seven Sacred Oils of Ancient Egypt.”

Welcome to my Wandering Stars website!

My name is Shane Clayton (AKA Montane in my musical circle of friends), owner of ‘The Egyptian’ Sacred Scents Store, which officially opened for business online in 2020. All the scented oils and incense reproductions used in my Egyptian aromatherapy practice and offered for sale here are handcrafted at my Wandering Stars cottage home in beautiful Butte Valley, California.

Visiting Egypt over the Vernal Equinox of 2018, I was deeply affected and inspired by the incredible architecture, art, and culture preserved there. It was like entering a time machine, with each temple or tomb being a portal to ancient times between 3000 BCE and the inception of the Common Era.

Among the many wondrous things that captured my attention were the ubiquitous images of the Egyptian Blue Lotus (not a true lotus, but a waterlily!), offerings of heaped jars of Madjet unguent with lists of the Seven Sacred Oils, and long-armed incense burners wafting smoke from the celebrated “Kepu” (or “Kyphi”) temple incense, all prominently depicted in tombs and temples going back over 3,000 years.

Upon my return and subsequent research, I was astounded to find that, while both early and contemporary Egyptologists had translated, identified, and published most of the ingredients and recipes I had seen engraved on two different temple’s “laboratory” walls, no real documented effort had been made to create authentic reproductions!

And so, armed with decades of professional botanical experience, the published translations of the original German discoverers, several peer-reviewed scholarly papers, and copious supportive historical and archaeological evidence, I went to work. This resulted in my ‘The Egyptian’ recreations, named after the mysterious Egyptian perfume documented by Dioscorides and other Greek and Roman writers around the turn of the last millennium BCE. All are faithfully reproduced following these ancient temple ingredient lists and recipes.

Taking great care in sourcing for quality, freshness, and sustainability, organic whenever possible, the rare botanical resins and essential oils incorporated in our products are primarily imported from the Mediterranean, India, and Asia, with some sustainably collected locally in Northern California and Nevada. Each has particular benefits and applications while working synergistically with others in the mixtures.

No synthetic ingredients or preservatives are used, nor are there any dyes except natural red alkanet root in our two unguents per the Egyptian recipes. While many of these ingredients are well-known or at least familiar to contemporary herbalists, skin/hair care specialists, and aromatherapists, there are some guaranteed surprises as well. See my “About Our Ingredients” info pages in the header links above.

Please be sure to check out my companion research articles for Wandering Stars members, which go into some detail about the different oils and incense, their many different botanical ingredients, and their applications. Due to issues with plagiarism and copyright infringement, mostly due to Artificial Intelligence data scouring, I have placed them behind a free ‘paywall’ to discourage the theft of my intellectual property.
