‘The Egyptian’

Sacred Scents Store

Offering Authentic Reproductions of the Temple Incense, Sacred Anointing Oils, and Unguents of Ancient Egypt

Wandering Stars has recreated a magical line of incense, scented oils, and unguent salves based on the inscriptions of ingredient lists and recipes carved in hieroglyphs on ancient Egyptian temple walls - primarily those of Horus Temple at Edfu and Seti I’s “Mansion of the Gods” Temple at Abydos.

“… it is almost impossible to overstate the importance of fragrance to the ancient Egyptians. In consideration of their prodigious feats in art, architecture, astronomy, and medicine, and their sacred science of spiritual knowledge and the symbolism that supports these, perhaps we should take a closer look at these powerful olfactory “medicines”, and begin experimenting with them in our contemporary practices of cosmetology, aromatherapy, healing arts, and spiritual communion. All in all, they are simply divine to the nose, skin, hair, and spirit - whatever your interests or beliefs may be.“

- from the Wandering Stars essay, The Seven Sacred Oils of Ancient Egypt.

Scented Luxuries of Ancient Egypt!

The scented oils, unguents, and incense reproductions offered here are all handcrafted in small batches by myself - Shane Clayton (AKA ‘Montane’ in my musical circle of friends) - at my Wandering Stars cottage located at the Dragonfly Healing and Education Center in rural Butte Valley, California.

Visiting Egypt over the Vernal Equinox of 2018, I was deeply affected and inspired by the incredible architecture, art, and culture preserved there; it was like entering a time machine - with each temple or tomb being a portal to ancient times somewhere between 3000 BCE and the inception of the Common Era.

Among the many wondrous things that captured my attention were the ubiquitous images of the Egyptian Blue Lotus, offerings of unguent-heaped jars of Seven Sacred Oils, and long-armed incense burners wafting smoke from the celebrated “Kyphi” temple incense, all prominently depicted in tombs and temples going back nearly 5,000 years. Upon my return and subsequent research, I was astounded to find that, while early Egyptologists had translated, identified, and published most of the ingredients and recipes I had seen engraved on two different temples’ “laboratory” walls, no real documented effort had been made to reproduce them.

And so, armed with several peer-reviewed scholarly papers and supportive historical and archaeological evidence, I went to work - resulting in my ‘The Egyptian’ creations, named after the mysterious Egyptian perfume documented by Dioscorides and other Greek and Roman writers around the turn of the last millennium BCE. All are faithfully reproduced following these ancient temple ingredient lists and recipes.

Taking great care in sourcing for quality, freshness, and sustainability, organic whenever possible, these rare botanical resins and essential oils are primarily imported from the Mediterranean, India, and Asia, with some sustainably collected locally in Northern California and Nevada. Each has particular benefits and applications while working synergistically with others in the mixtures. No synthetic ingredients are used, with no dyes except natural red alkanet root in our two unguents.

While many of the ingredients are well-known or at least familiar to contemporary herbalists, skin/hair care specialists, and aromatherapists, there are some guaranteed surprises as well. See “About Our Ingredients” and the info pages in the header links above.
